Understanding the Invisible Battle
Chronic illness is often invisible, making it challenging for others to fully grasp what we are going through. Each person's experience with the same illness is unique, impacting individuals in different ways. This leads to the struggle of comparison, as we navigate our own journeys with illness.While some people may appear healthy on the outside, they may be battling pain, fatigue, and other symptoms on a daily basis. This invisibility can lead to feelings of isolation and misunderstanding, as others may not fully grasp the extent of the struggles faced by those with chronic illnesses.
It's important to remember that just because someone may not show signs of illness, it doesn't mean they aren't fighting a difficult battle internally. Its time that we practice empathy and understanding towards those with chronic illnesses, acknowledging that their experiences are valid and deserving of compassion. By being more aware of the invisible challenges faced by others, we can create a more supportive and inclusive environment for everyone. My own invisble battle
There comes a moment when I must be fully alert to my surroundings. It's crucial to pay attention to the people around me, the things that hold significance, and bid farewell to certain habits that no longer serve a purpose in my life, because im not well and it time to expect that.
Things I'm discovering in therapy include terms like codependency, people-pleasing, and feelings of abandonment. I realize that I have allowed certain behaviors and individuals to stay in my life for too long. After some tough conversations this week, I've had some realizations. The most significant one is that I must acknowledge that this is my current reality, my life right now. It's time to prioritize myself and bid farewell to those habits, people, and the cycle of constant chasing.
The harsh truth is, I have never been this scared before. It's tough when your facing a serious thing, and I've been struggling since October 2023, which has been something i dread to think about. It's something I never thought would happen, as I've been proactive for three years to find happiness, prioritize health, move past abuse, and become the person I've always aspired to be.
My reality is a simple assult lead to three years of absolute hell, jaw issues, constant headaches, vertigo and nausea just name a few things, eventually i was diagonised with post cunsussion and inner ear balance damage, partial hearing loss and with the right care things will improve this is after two hospital admissions, experiencing stroke like symptoms and pressure in the head. As the new year started i have felt im getting worst not better, i feel like im loosing part of me everyday and no one can tell me whats going to i walked into ent dr this ear and that changed everything.
This is what my life looks like at the moment. Every day, I am constantly torn between the need to take care of my body and the challenges it presents for me to function. I have a team right behind me, including a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, therapist, neurologist, doctor, and ear, nose, and throat specialist. Each of these individuals plays a crucial role in my journey to recovery. As they work together to understand my situation, it feels like piecing together a complex puzzle. Though it is time-consuming and frustrating, we have made progress. I have moved past post-concussion symptoms and a mild brain injury. One aspect that intrigues me is how trauma affects the body, leading to discussions about the possibility of Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). It makes sense why they are hopeful to have solved the puzzle. Currently, I am experiencing hearing loss in my right ear, a heavy sensation in my right arm, and challenges with chewing, swallowing, and eyesight. To be honest, I used to push through my previous medical conditions and sail through life effortlessly well i fooled my self to think i was. However, this experience has shifted my perspective and approach because, for the first time since falling ill, I am truly scared. This situation is beyond my control, and I can no longer predict how each day will unfold.
My concern has been losing my independence, the freedom to work even when it's limited, the ability to drive, and losing control over planning my days. When confronted with a serious situation that I struggle to acknowledge, navigating daily tasks becomes challenging. This is one of the main reasons I began pursuing my vision and dreams, aiming to generate income that would alleviate the pressure of working during tough times and allow me to focus on recovery.
Finding Hope in the Darkness
Living with a chronic illness can be an so dam overwhelming and isolating, the days can often be filled with physical pain, emotional strain, and a sense of uncertainty about the future. The daily challenges of managing symptoms, coping with medical appointments, advocating for yourself in a broken health system and navigating the complexities of treatment can take a a massive toll on the mental health. It's not uncommon for us to feel a sense of loss for the life we once knew and to grapple with feelings of frustration, sadness, or hopelessness. However, amidst these struggles, many of us find hope can be a powerful antidote to despair, providing a beacon of light in the darkest of times.
Finding hope while living with a chronic illness often begins with embracing a mindset of resilience and adaptability. This may involve setting realistic goals, celebrating small victories, and acknowledging the progress made, no matter how ismall it may seem. Building a strong support network of family, friends, and healthcare professionals can also be instrumental in fostering a sense of hope. Engaging in hobbies, pursuing passions, and finding purpose in everyday activities can also contribute to a more hopeful outlook. Ultimately, while living with a chronic illness is undeniably challenging, it is possible to find hope and meaning in the journey, transforming adversity into an opportunity for personal growth and resilience.
Despite the challenges of living with a chronic illness, there is always hope to be found.
